Explore the island of Kefalonia

The capital of Kefalonia is Argostoli, a beautiful modern city.
This site is also known for the sinkholes, a really unusual geological phenomenon. During this phenomenon the sea water enters the land and then disappears into the land.
A walk along the coast from the center of Argostoli to the sinkholes takes about half an hour and is very enjoyable. On the way you will find small beaches for a cool dip in the sea.

In Kefalonia island there are many remarkable locations and attractions to visit. The Castle that has existed since the medieval era and the church of Agios Gerasimos, the patron saint of the island, are quite interesting.

The island of Kefalonia promises to give you wonderful moments and unique holidays. It has a natural heritage, its beaches, beautiful forests, caves of unique beauty, picturesque villages and delicious cuisine, Kefalonia is an excellent holiday destination.

When to Visit Kefalonia for Holidays

Summer is the best time to visit Kefalonia for holidays. The months of July and August are the months with the most demand, so if you are planning your holidays during this period, it is good to make your reservations well in advance.

What to see in your Kefalonia Holidays

In your Kefalonia holiday you must see the unique geological phenomenon that is observed at the edge of the Argostoli peninsula, which scientists even today are unable to explain with certainty. The sea penetrates with momentum into the cracks of the ground and is lost in sinkholes.
In 1963, two geologists at the Technical University of Graz in Austria dropped 160 kilograms of paint into one of the sinks. Two weeks later, traces of the paint appeared on the other side of the island 14 km away as well as in the cave of Melissani.

The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli was founded in 1957. The museum is small but in its three rooms you can see exhibits that were found on the island and date from the Paleolithic to the Late Roman period.
The archeological museum includes exhibits of Mycenaean and Roman objects, gold coins, swords and even tools of the Paleolithic man of Kefalonia. It is located in the center of the city of Argostoli.

The De Bosset Bridge is a huge 689.9 meter long stone bridge that connects Argostoli with the rest of mainland Kefalonia. It was designed by the Swiss engineer Charles Philippe De Bosset in order to shorten the trips to the island and was built in 1813 in just two weeks!
When you cross the bridge you notice at some point a stone obelisk that seems to emerge from the sea. This monument is called “Kolona” and was built as a sign of gratitude to the Kefalonian Parliament and consequently the people of Kefalonia to Great Britain.

The castle of Agios Georgios is located 5 km outside the town of Argostoli. It was named after the small church of Agios Georgios that existed at the top of the hill. The castle was built in the 12th century by the Byzantine emperors and its outer walls are still well preserved.

The castle was the capital of Kefalonia until 1757. The visitor can see in addition to its walls, the churches and buildings that existed inside as well as the remains of a bridge built by the French.

The monastery is 15 km from Argostoli and the memory of Agios Gerasimos is celebrated twice a year, on October 20 and August 16.
The Monastery of Agios Gerasimos is one of the most beautiful buildings in Kefalonia. It was founded in 1560 by the Saint himself who shortly after his death was proclaimed the patron saint of the island.
Very interesting is the hermitage of the Saint, whose entrance is inside the temple and his relic which is kept in a silver shrine. In the area of the monastery there are three more large plane trees that are said to have been planted by the Saint as well as three wells which he opened with his own hands.

It is located in the area of Sami and its main room has unique acoustics. The dimensions is 65 x 45 meters and its height is 20 meters.
It is the only cave in all of Greece where music concerts are organized.
The cave of Drogarati was discovered about 300 years ago when a piece fell from its roof after a big earthquake. At that point is its main entrance.
The cave of Drogarati is one of the most important in Greece with stalactites and stalagmites which date back millions of years and the temperature inside does not exceed 18 degrees Celsius.

Northwest of Sami at a distance of two kilometers is the lake cave of Melissani which was discovered in 1951.
The natural entrance of the cave has dimensions of 40 x 50 meters and seems to have been created when a piece of the roof fell apparently due to an earthquake. The lake is located 20 meters below the ground, has a length of 160 meters while the depth of its waters is between 10 and 30 meters.
The interior is decorated with stalactites in various shapes and sizes.
The tour inside is done by boats and is particularly impressive in its central point where the rays of the sun that pass through the opening of the roof paint the waters of the lake with different colors and make the spectacle magical. A visit to Melissani cave is a must in your Kefalonia holidays.

Kefalonia Holidays – Gastronomy, Local products

The island of Kefalonia is distinguished for its fertile lands, with vast olive groves and lush vineyards. They offer natural beauty and fine products. Wine, olive oil, feta cheese and honey are the best known of these.
Wines such as Robola, Moschato, Vostilidi Tsaousi, Thriniatiko, Mavrodafni, are produced exclusively in Kefalonia and are distinguished for their special taste.

Traditional recipes combine various weeds in the pot with leeks, onion, spinach, celery, oil and tomato. The vlita is cooked with tomato oil and garlic, while the nuns, which look like asparagus, become a nice omelette. A favorite recipe is Strapatsada which is made with eggs and tomatoes. Bourbourelia are made of various legumes (lentils, beans, broad beans, chickpeas, and corn). Other recipes are boiled meat, braised rabbit, and artichokes stuffed with fennel, garlic and rice or broad beans. Tomato is especially used in fish dishes.

There is a great variety in sweets: Mantolato is a local dessert of Kefalonia made from almonds and sugar or honey.
There is a lot of spoon quince made from cherry, bergamot, mescola (medlar). Confetti (pastokydono), pasteli, favorite pancakes with honey and cinnamon or with sugar, honeyed doubles with filling of nuts, donuts, rice milk and milk pie (especially on Halloween). Mizithropita is one of the most tasty sweets. The almond pie is also amazing, while the macaroons differ from the other islands as they look like cookies and are decorated with a cherry.

Kefalonia Holidays – Villages

Sami is the largest and most important town of Kefalonia as it is the main port of the island. It has a lot of movement and is full of life.
The coastal road is full of shops, taverns, restaurants and cafes while in the port moor many boats that reach here from various places. Sami is also close to many of the sights of Kefalonia such as the cave of Melissani, the cave of Drogarati and the beautiful beach of Antisamos.

Agia Efimia is 34 km away from Argostoli and 9 km from Sami and is one of the most beautiful coastal villages of Kefalonia that you can see in your Kefalonia holiday. In its small picturesque port you will see moored boats and sailboats from all over the world and the area provides all the amenities for a vacation without missing anything.
With traditional architecture, hospitable inhabitants, endless views of the Ionian Sea and many shops of all kinds, it is the ideal summer resort for families, couples and lonely visitors.

Fiskardo is located in the northernmost part of Kefalonia and was named after the Norman crusader Roberto Giscardo who conquered it in 1085.
Most of the houses were built in the 18th century and retain their architecture unchanged. A walk through its narrow streets will fill you with images of two-storey houses with walls painted in bright colors and their courtyards filled with all kinds of flowers.

Assos village is 36 km away from Argostoli and is one of the most picturesque and beautiful villages of Kefalonia, which is why it gathers thousands of visitors every year, suitable for your Kefalonia holidays.
Built amphitheatrically in a green landscape, half of it spreads on a narrow strip of land, the peninsula on which many of its houses have been built, while on the other side it has its Venetian castle which, together with that of Agios Georgios, was one of the largest castles of that time.
Assos is sure to enchant you with the traditional Ionian architecture of its houses and its picturesque harbor.

Top Kefalonia Holidays beach

The beaches of Kefalonia with its crystal clear waters and golden beaches are famous all over the world.
Some with sand, others with pebbles, others between steep cliffs, all will enchant your Kefalonia holidays. The whole island is scattered with beautiful beaches that satisfy every taste and every visitor.

The enchanting beach of Antisamos is about 4 km from Sami. It is large in length and width and is surrounded by trees and oaks whose color is reflected in the water, giving it a beautiful blue-green color. The beach is organized and you will find umbrellas, sunbeds and a canteen for snacks, coffees and juices. Not particularly suitable for young children as the water here is deep.
Access is easy and there is ample parking, while at the same time you can go there by bus that leaves you right next to the beach

Skala beach in Kefalonia is considered one of the largest with a length of more than five kilometers and is located at the southern tip of the island.
Easily accessible 35 km away from Argostoli. It has fine sand and is separated from the road along its entire length by pine trees. It’s busy but its large size helps not to give the feeling of overcrowding.
There is a school for water sports and beach bars with sunbeds and umbrellas. In the small fishing village of Skala along the main road that leads to the beach you will find taverns, restaurants and cafes.

The beach of Koroni is about 24 km away from Argostoli and has fine blonde sand and crystal clear blue waters.
There is a canteen, a few sunbeds and umbrellas but generally it is a quiet beach that offers you cool waters but mainly the possibility for peace and quiet.
If you stay until the afternoon you will watch one of the most beautiful sunsets of your life. The road that leads to the beach of Koroni is a dirt road for some distance and some parts of the road need more caution.

Avithos beach is located in the southern part of Kefalonia and is considered by many to be the most beautiful on the island. It is surrounded by lush landscape, has a golden sandy beach and crystal clear blue waters.
Its waters deepen smoothly and that is why it is ideal for children’s toys. Just opposite is the small island of Zeus which you can reach by swimming.
The beach in Avithos is fully organized with a canteen, sunbeds and umbrellas.

A destination that you surely do not want to miss on your Kefalonia holiday. It is a large organized beach for holidays which is known for its crimson sand with its firming properties for the skin.
It is known to all the locals that the gray clay of the soil in Xi offers free tightening and cleansing of the skin and you will even see many women spreading it on their face.

Xi was so named from the letter X of the Greek alphabet as the bay in which the beach is located seems to have the shape of the Greek letter. Its location makes it windless and its shallow waters are ideal for families with small children who can play in its waters without fear.
In addition to umbrellas, sunbeds, canteen and restaurant in Xi you have the opportunity for water sports such as jet skiing, water skiing, parachuting etc.

Platia Ammos is about 40 km from Argostoli and is surrounded by wild and steep cliffs. It is a beautiful beach, but the descent to it, which is about 400 steps, much of which has collapsed after the earthquakes, makes access very difficult and dangerous (do not try to go down to the beach if you have small children with you).
It is located at the bottom of a bay and its wild beauty is breathtaking. Of course it is disorganized and isolated so if you finally decide to bypass the difficulties and go down you should have an umbrella with you to protect yourself from the sun and the heat.
